14th Rostocker Bioenergieforum - Call for Papers

In the interests of sustainable development, Germany's energy supply must be completely converted to renewable energies (RE) over the next few decades, and the supply of industry with organic raw materials must be shifted as far as possible from petrochemical to bio-based materials. This ambitious goal of long-term integration of biomass into a sustainable energy and bioeconomy system can only be achieved if the biomass is used efficiently, in an environmentally friendly way and with the greatest possible economic benefit. Consistent energy savings and the complete conversion to RE are fundamental prerequisites for the desired climate neutrality by 2050, and negative emissions must also be generated. The material and energetic coupled and cascading use of biogenic resources is a central element of a climate-neutral bioeconomy, whereby in particular the carbon and nutrient cycles must be closed. Bioenergy is to be provided from sustainable raw materials and waste streams.

We kindly ask you to submit suggestions for topics by February 5, 2021 here.

IBBA - Workshop on Industrial Wastewater Management

Exploring higher energy efficiency and sustainable solutions - special focus on pulp and paper residues

The treatment of wastewater for industrial activities, such as pulp and paper production, is often highly energy intensive and alternatives are needed to achieve the reduction targets for fossil CO2-emissions. At the same time, sustainable wastewater management holds the potential for producing renewable fuels, such as biogas.

IBBA would like to invite you to our two-day workshop, where we will discuss more resource efficient concepts, which combine e.g. industrial wastewater treatment with biogas production. The concepts should improve the carbon footprint of industrial wastewater treatment – through both energy savings and renewable fuel production.

Experts from the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI), Biogas Research Center (BRC), Scandinavian Biogas and Episome Biotech will, among others, present case studies and new concepts. On day two we will visit the Fiskeby Board mill including their wastewater treatment plant, at which biogas is produced in an anaerobic step.

IBBA Workshop 2015: Pretreatment of lignocellulosic substrates for biogas production

September 10th, 2015 in Malmö Sweden

Supported by IEA Bioenergy Task 37.

Every year IBBA organize a workshop within a specific topic in the biogas field. The purpose of the workshop is to create a network between researchers within the same field in the baltic region. The workshop topic in 2015 was pretreatment of lignocellulosic substrates for biogas production. The workshop took place the on the 10th of September in Sweden close to Malmö, and less than an hour's journey from Copenhagen international airport. Swedish Gas Technology Centre (SGC) organized the event in cooperation with Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ) and Institute for Biogas, Waste Management & Energy (Germany).

Straw and other lignocellulosic substrates constitutes a large part of the European biogas potential. These substrates are difficult to digest without a suitable pretreatment method that increases the methane yield and decreases the required retention time in the digester. At the IBBA workshop 2015, the latest developments in this field were presented by speakers from various European countries such as Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Austria.
